Used to improve the visibility of a heavy vehicle or trailer to following traffic in low light or at night, giving other drivers a reflective reference point that shows the width and outline of the vehicle ahead of headlights picking out the vehicle itself.
- Meets: AS4001.1 classification and manufacturing standard, fitted under VSB12 (National Code of Practice, Rear Marking Plates)
- Required on: vehicles over 12 tonnes GVM and trailers over 10 tonnes GTM
- Reflective sheeting: Class 400 (formerly Class 1)
- Fitted: on a near vertical rear facing surface, positioned symmetrically about the vehicle's centreline
