Understanding NHVR Sign Requirements

Heavy vehicle guide

Understanding the NHVR

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator runs one set of laws for heavy vehicles over 4.5 tonnes GVM, including the standards behind rear markers and warning signs.

Where the NHVR’s rules apply

  • Applies in: Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT.
  • Not adopted in: WA and the NT, which run their own laws. Their vehicles follow national law when they cross the border.
  • Standard Long Vehicle and Road Train signs are still accepted in WA. See state differences.

Operator duties

Operators must keep vehicles to the vehicle standards. A vehicle that doesn’t comply is defective, which can mean a fine, a defect notice or prosecution. Keep signs current, correctly fitted and legible.

Our rear marker plates and warning signs are made to the standards listed in our catalogue (VSB12, VSG-19, AS 4001.1, AS 1906.1, AS 1744). Each product page lists the standard it refers to. Which signs do I need?
